Original Artist: Pool with Two Figures & 宋宜蓁(Song I-Chen)
In Hockney’s iconic scene of calm detachment, the clear swimming pool and the distance between two figures express a subtle tension between seeing and being seen, intimacy and separation. In this collaboration, the figure beneath the water is reimagined as a Taiwanese endemic species—the pangolin. Nocturnal and elusive by nature, the pangolin lives largely out of sight and has long faced threats from habitat loss. It is one of Taiwan’s important protected species, carrying a quiet presence that echoes the painting’s sense of distance and hidden life.
